"Harmonious society" (和谐社会 hé xié shè huì) was first used by President Hu Jintao during the 2005 National People’s Congress meeting to define the ultimate goal of China’s development. The harmonious society targets a middle-class-oriented society in which the country’s legal system is perfected, the widening income gap is narrowed, the social and economic developments are balanced and the environment is well-protected.
