Close to the Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai Wildlife Zoo, the first of its kind in China, covers a vast tract of land featuring a combined modern zoo and wildlife park. Although the animals are free to roam or relax anywhere, since deep moats and solid fencing are widely used, Shanghai Wildlife Zoo is able to confine the animals to their living spaces without causing risk to themselves or visitors.

There are over 200 species of rare animals in the zoo, housed in two separate areas, the walking zone and the bus-only zone.

In the walking zone, a wide range of species can be seen and they are divided into several groups, e.g., an herbivore zone, an aquatic bird lake, an enclosed aviary, a butterfly aviary, and a monkey zone. In the bus-only zone, people have to stay in a fully-closed bus; they can see zebra, camels, antelope, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, etc. through the bus windows. Dangerous carnivores, such as bears, tigers, lions, and cheetahs, are kept in separated special larger zones.
