The Shanghai Subway, opened to traffic in 1995, now has eight lines, 235 km of tracks and 163 stations in operation and serves 3 million passengers per day. The eight lines are Line 1, Line 2, Line 3, Line 4, Line 5, Line 6, Line 8 and Line 9. The fares are charged by distance. The basic fare is 3 yuan (about 0.4 US dollar) for journeys under 6 km and the maximum fare is 9 yuan (about 1.3 US dollar). The city's metro is planned to have 13 lines with over 500 km of tracks by 2012 and will be able to serve 8 million passengers per day.
