Located to the west of the City Hall in the People's Square, Shanghai Grand Theater was designed by the world-famous French architect who designed Paris' Bastille Opera House. Built in 1994, the theater hosts performances of top-notch international and Chinese music, operas, ballet, symphony orchestras, and dramas. Its architecture is so wonderful that people both at home and abroad look upon it as a cultural symbol of Shanghai. It has the world's largest stage equipped with convertible facilities, and houses a few separate performance venues, including the huge main audience hall, the Lyric Theater; the 600-seat Drama Theater, and the 200-seat Studio Theater.
