From downtown Shanghai to suburban Jiading District, the whole expressway is 20.5 km long and 45 m wide. Modern traffic monitoring facilities were put into use for the first time and three data acquisition systems were established to collect data on the speed and models of passing vehicles. Emergency phones are available every one kilometer for drivers and expressway management staff members to keep contact with the central control room. With a designated speed limit of 120 km/hr, it's open for traffic day and night.

The Shanghai-Jiading Expressway, the first one of its kind in China was completed in 1988.
