Sang Lan (桑兰)

Many people still remember that a beautiful small girl fell heavily onto the floor due to a faulty move in the vaulting horse competition at the 4th Goodwill Games in New York, July 1998. She is Sang Lan, a member of the Chinese women's gymnastics team. Her cervical spinal cord was severely injured and her body was completely paralyzed below the chest.

A lively and cheerful girl, Sang Lan was the vaulting champion at the 7th National Games. Before her injury, her skills had been improving steadily. She was very likely to become another shining star of the Chinese women's gymnastic team. However, unexpected misfortune befell the 17-year-old girl.

After the injury, she did not give up. Her optimistic mood won her admiration from all the people who knew her. She started her college education at Peking University in 2002, majoring in journalism at the Department of Journalistic and Communication Studies. Since then, she has become a TV anchorwoman. If gymnastics was once the most important part of her life, she now has a broader vision as a TV sports journalist. She has to know about other sports. Apart from gymnastics, she also likes volleyball, badminton and rhythmical gymnastics. What she loves are the graceful and lively sports, although she now has to sit in her wheelchair to do everything.

Life has placed her many difficulties in her path, but she has overcome them. Today, she not only has her own program, but also takes part in various activities with great devotion. Since being away from the competitive arena, her positive mental state is sufficient to get her a position in any line of work in which she would like to take part.
