Located in 68 km southwest of the Ruyuan county seat, the Ruyuan Grand Canyon is 15 km long and 300 m deep. Formed of quartz sandstone, the top terrain of the canyon is fairly flat. A stream flows down the terraced cliffside for more than 200 m to the valley below, forming an impressive waterfall and feeding a crystal-clear pond called the Yellow Dragon Pool. On one side of the canyon is the Reaching the Sky Ladder, a path of 1,386 stone steps at a 50-degree angle, leading to the bottom of the canyon.
