On Oct 12, 2001, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced that work on decoding the Indica rice genome was complete, and would be published for free use by the rest of the world.

Chen Zhu, vice president of CAS, said decoding the genome would lay the foundation for breeding high-yield, high quality rice and would also boost understanding of wheat, corn and other grass crops.

The project was jointly undertaken by the Genome Bioinformatics Center of CAS, the Genome Research Center of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the China National Hybrid Rice Research Center.

The variety of rice decoded was "Indica 9311", bred by Yuan Longping, the father of "hybrid rice". Decoding Indica 9311 was the first step in a Chinese Hybrid Rice Genome and Development Program that was launched in May 2000.
