The Orient Express luxury train, traveling a route through Europe and Asia for the first time in history, arrived at the Beijing Railway Station on September 22, 1988.

The train set off on September 7 from Paris, France, and finally arrived in Japan via the Federal Republic of Germany, Democratic Republic of Germany, Poland, the Soviet Union and China. It was the Express's longest route since the 19th century.

The train carried 61 passengers from seven countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Canada and Switzerland. Each passenger paid US$20,000 for the romantic journey.

The Express stopped in Beijing for two days before continuing south to Shenzhen.
