One-child policy

One-child policy (独生子女政策) is China's population control policy which restricts couples to only one child with exceptions in several cases. On September 25, 1980, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issued an open letter to Party members and Youth League members, calling on them to set an example in the promotion of a one-child policy. The policy aimed to keep the Chinese population under 1.2 billion by the end of the 20th century.
