Mount Hengshan, one of the Five Great Mountains in China, is located in Hengyang County, With a diameter of 150 km and having 72 lofty peaks, it is divided into four principal scenic spots, all of which have been given poetic nicknames: “Grandeur of the Zhurong Peak,” “Charm of the Sutra Repository,” “Wonder of the Waterfall Cave,” and “Serenity of the Fangguang Temple.” It used to be a sacrificial site for emperors in ancient China as well as a religious center where both Daoism and Buddhism have long coexisted.
