Born in Dailian City, Mao Dezhen was a long-distance runner on the national track and field team in the late 1950s, and became a coach in the city's spare-time sports school after he retired from active service on the team. He was the trainer of Mu Weiguo and Sun Ripeng and other outstanding athletes. In 1995, he became the coach for Wang Junxia, holder of the world records in the women's 3,000m and 10,000m races. Thanks to his effective coaching, Wang Junxia won the gold medal in the 5,000m race and the silver medal in the 10,000m race at the 26th Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996.
