Luan Jujie (栾菊杰) won a gold medal in the women's foil event at the 23rd Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 to become China's first Olympic fencing champion. She was also the first Asian fencer to mount the Olympic medal-awarding podium which had previously been dominated by European and American fencers.
