With the approval of the State Council, the List of Wild Animals Under State Protection was promulgated on January 13, 1989. It included 96 species of wild animals under Class I state protection, such as the giant panda, snub-nosed monkey, gibbon, white-flag dolphin and Chinese sturgeon; and 160 species under Class II protection, such as the macaque, black bear, golden cat, red deer and Mongolian gazelle.
