Liang Shiqiu reads a piece of newspaper in his study.

Liang Shiqiu(Chinese: 梁实秋)was born in Beijing in 1903. In his early years, he went to study in the United States before coming back to teach at Tsinghua University and Peking University. He also did many translations and served as the editor of the Crescent Moon Monthly in the early 1930s. After he moved to Taiwan in 1949, he became the director of the College of Liberal Arts of Taiwan Normal University and created the Taiwan English Teaching Center and the English Study Institute. He also gained some accomplishments in English literature, including his works History of English Literature and Selected Readings in English Literature. His essays, such as the Yashe Essays, were also very famous. Liang's compilation of the Far East English-Chinese Dictionary was also loved by many English learners.

Liang was born in an old official family and lived an aristocratic life with little knowledge about poor people's lives. However, he insisted on "classless literature" and opposed the using of literature as a tool to reach political aims. He sought for freedom of thought and opposed conformity. Thus, he constantly dueled, not with a sword, but a pen, fighting with leftist writers like Lu Xun in the late 1930s. In the 1940s, he began to write essays and achieved a high position in essay writing. His Yashe Essays were reprinted more than 50 times in Hong Kong and Taiwan, which laid him a foundation as a prominent essayist.

In his later years, Liang went to live in the United States and obtained a long-term residence permit, but he never changed his nationality. He eventually returned to Taipei, where he spent the rest of his life.
