There were many poets in the Tang Dynasty, yet Li Bai (701-762) enjoyed the greatest reputation for his unsurpassed achievements. His political disappointment, audacious temperament, and the prosperous and highly developed situation of the Tang Dynasty all inspired him to become the poet who could compose "100 poems after drinking to his heart's content." Nearly 1,000 of his poems have been handed down. They have a strong, uplifting artistic appeal, the language lucid and smooth, the meter harmonious and varied, and the imagination rich and uninhibited. Li Bai is an outstanding representative of the romantic poetry of ancient China.
