Kim Jong Un (金正恩) is the current supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Born on Jan. 8, 1983, he is the third and youngest son of his deceased predecessor Kim Jong Il, and grandson of Kim Il Sung.
He reportedly studied in Switzerland around the year 1997 and can speak English and German. After returning to the DPRK from Switzerland, he successively studied in the Kim Il Sung University and the Kim Il Sung Military University, completing courses in computers and military strategies.
In September 2010, he was made a general and the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party.
In December 2011, he was named the supreme commander of the Korean People's Army.
On April 11, 2012, he was named first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, chairman of the Central Military Commission, member of the Central Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea, and member of the Standing Committee of the Central Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea.
On April 13, 2012, he was named the first chairman of the National Defense Commission of the DPRK.
