Jing'an Temple

Located at the crossroad on Nanjing Road (W.) and Huashan Road, Jing'an Temple is one of those nationally famous Buddhist monasteries. It is said that the temple was first built as early as A.D. 247, the 10th year of King Sun Quan of the Eastern Wu State during the Three Kingdoms Period. However, it was destroyed in the war-ridden years between 1851 and 1861. The existent temple was rebuilt in 1880 during the reign period of Qing Emperor Guangxu with the help of donations. Since 1949, Jing’an Temple has been renovated several times.

Jing’an Temple houses a great number of historical and cultural relics of high value, including a big bell cast in the Ming Dynasty, a stone figure of the Buddha sculptured in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and a few painting and calligraphy works by well-known masters such as Zhu Zhishan, Wu Changshuo, Wen Zhengming, and Zhang Daqian.
