After graduation, he spent 20 years working in the advertising industry, until tragedy struck. Jimmy was diagnosed with the fatal blood disease leukemia in 1995 and his outlook seemed bleak. Miraculously, though, the disease was brought under control and the dark cloud which had hovered over him was lifted. Jimmy (Chinese: 几米) is the pseudonym of popular Taiwan cartoonist Liao Fubin (Chinese: 廖福彬), best known for his dreamy colors and striking scenes which evoke the melancholy and loneliness of big city life.

The prolific cartoonist has created a total of 35 comic strips since 1998, including the widely-acclaimed, “Turn Left, Turn Right”, “Underground Metro” and “Starry Starry Night”, which was adapted into a film and had its premiere on Nov. 3, 2011.

In 1998, he published two collections of his drawings—“The Secret in the Forest” and “The Smiling Fish”, and the unique style of the cartoons quickly ensured a devoted readership. In 1999, his gentle metropolitan romance, “Turn Left, Turn Right”, was acclaimed as one of the year’s top 10 influential books by Kingstone, a popular bookstore chain in Taiwan. It was also adapted in a film starring Gigi Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro.
