Jim Yong Kim

Jim Yong Kim (金墉), a U.S. citizen, has been selected as the World Bank's new president, the bank announced on April 16, 2012.

Born on Dec. 8, 1959 in Seoul, Kim moved with his family to the United States when he was five. Kim grew up in Iowa and is now a U.S. national. His father was a dentist teaching in a university.

Kim received his medical doctorate from Harvard Medical School in 1991 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University in 1993.

Kim is a former dean of Harvard Medical School. He was appointed president of Dartmouth College in March 1999, and became the first president of Asian origin in the Ivy League's history.

During his work in Peru in the 1980s, Kim invented a key treatment for drug-resistant TB traits. He also worked at the World Health Organization in charge of the AIDS and HIV research department.

On March 23, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that the United States would nominate Kim as the next president of the World Bank to succeed the outgoing Robert Zoellick, whose term expires at the end of June. On April 16, the World Bank announced Kim was chosen to head the World Bank and to take office on July 1.

The World Bank's decision will make Kim the first person of Asian origin, and the first person of non-European ancestry to hold the post.
