On September 28, 1993, China launched the Human Genome Project HGP). The National Natural Science Foundation of China approved the project Research on Chinese Genetic Structures by Chen Zhu and Professor Qiang Boqin, which became part of the HGP.

HGP is one of the most important global projects regarding biological and medical sciences. It aims to decode the inherited information encrypted in DNA from which about 100,000 genetic structures and functions can be revealed. Heritage diversities can be analyzed based on the data of the research. The project has proved useful for discovering the causes of about 5,000 complicated and multi-genetic diseases, and has set up a database on how to diagnosis, prevent and treat fatal illnesses. Many countries, including the United States, European Union, Japan, Canada and the Commonwealth of Independent States (now Russia) also have HGP initiatives.
