Its predecessor was the Golden Millet Garden belonging to Qian Yuanliao, King Guangling of Wuyue State during the Five Dynasties Period (907-960). At the turn of the 17th century during the Ming Dynasty, it became the residence of Shen Shixing, a high-ranking official. In 1841 during the Qing Dynasty, Wang Zao and Wang Kun renovated its east garden and renamed it Yiyuan, or Huanxiu Mountain Villa.
