Huang Zumo (L)

Huang Zumo (1921.8.7-2011.2.19) was a famous Chinese film director, notable for shooting China’s first movie with a kissing scene.

In 1946, Huang graduated from the National Modern Drama School, China’s first drama school established in 1935 in the former Kuomintang regime capital of Nanjing. After his graduation, Huang worked as a script keeper and vice director at Kunlun Film Co., a private movie company established in 1946. In 1955, he directed his maiden film, Up to the Golden Mountain. In 1963, Huang became the director of Shanghai Film Studios. His best known film is Romance on Lushan Mountain, starring Zhang Yu and Guo Kaimin. The film, featuring China’s first kissing scene, grabbed an international film festival award from Italy after it was released in 1980. Due to its consistent daily screenings at Lushan since its release, the film holds the Guinness World Record for Longest Original Run of a Film in One Cinema.

Huang died of heart failure on February 19, 2011, in Shanghai, at the age of 90.
