The State Development Planning Commission (SDPC) organized China's first hearing on setting prices of railway tickets on January 12, 2002. Thirty-three delegates representing customers, railway employees, government officials and scholars, as well as 30 audit representatives, participated in the meeting at the Beijing Railway Building. As a result of the hearing, for the first time railway ticket prices were allowed to float within a set range in accordance with market forces.
