Guangzong Lamasery, popularly known as the South Lamasery, nestles on the northwest flank of Bayan Songbur Peak in the Alxa Left Banner. Covering and area of 9.4 sq. km, it is encircled by eight peaks. It is among Inner Mongolia's best-known lamaseries for its long history, large size, huge number of lamas as well as influence among Buddhists in Mongol-and Tibetan-inhabited areas. It was the lamasery of the Sixth Dalai Lama, and has a stupa containing his body.
