The current Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (IATA code: CAN) was formally put into operation on August 5, 2004, replacing its predecessor completed in the 1930s. The new airport, with a total investment of 19.8 billion yuan, is well-equipped and modernized. Serving 111 destinations at home and aboard with 152 domestic and international air routes, the airport functions as one of the three hub airports of China along with Beijing Capital International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airports, as well as an air hub with worldwide connections. In 2007, the airport, with 30,958,467 people handled, was the second busiest passenger airport on the mainland of China, after Beijing Capital International Airport and before Shanghai Pudong International Airprot.
