Great Hall of the People

The Great Hall of the People lies on the west side of Tian'anmen Square with its main entrance facing the square. Behind the main entrance is the simple and elegant central hall, and behind the hall is a grand meeting room 76 meters in wide and 60 meters long with a capacity to hold 10,000 people. To the north of the grand meeting room is a banquet hall that can seat 5,000 people. To the south are the office buildings of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. There are also halls and rooms named after China's cities and regions, decorated with local-style furnishings. The Great Hall of the People is often the venue for official banquets and receptions in honor of overseas guests.

The construction work was completed on September 24, 1959.
