Gedain Songtsanling Monastery in Shangri-la County is also known as Guihua Monastery. Built in 1659 on a mountain slope imitating the layout of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, it is the largest monastery complex in Yunnan. It has two main halls and 100 chambers either for the meditation of the living Buddhas or as shrines of worship for different sects of the local community. At its heyday, it had over 1,200 lamas.
