China's first Film Festival, marking 40 years of the film industry in the People's Republic of China, opened in Beijing on September 21, 1989. The historic feature film – Founding Ceremony – and the documentary – 40 Years Ago Today – were premiered at the opening ceremony of the week-long event. Ten prominent films stars: Zhao Dan, Cui Wei, Bai Yang, Sun Daolin, Yu Lan, Wang Xingang, Xie Fang, Liu Xiaoqing, Pan Hong and Jiang Wen received awards at the festival.
