On CIIC:Selected anniversaries/September 16, 2009September 16, 1989, completion of a major refurbishment restored the charm of Dunhuang Crescent Lake after two decades of depredations.

The Crescent Lake, 5 km north of Dunhuang City in Gansu Province, is surrounded by desert. It has survived millennia of sandstorms and is regarded as a natural miracle. But the famous beauty spot lost its past luster due to vandalism during "Cultural Revolution" and subsequent neglect.

The restored lake was enlarged from 6.9 mu to 13.5 mu and its depth restored to 3.5 meters from 0.8 meters.
