On September 20, 1954, the first session of the National People's Congress passed and enacted the Constitution of the People's Republic of China. The constitution defined China's state nature, its political system and citizen's rights and obligations.

In addition, the constitution defined the path that China would take in its transition to socialism and defined the country's economic structures and foundation.
