Located in Mengdong River valley in Lincang Va Autonomous County, the Cangyuan Cliff Paintings cover an area of over 400 sq m. They are among the oldest of its kind ever discovered in China.

The cliff paintings are scattered on 11 cliffs, a rare treasure of primeval art. Despite weathering over the past 3,000 years, their colors are still brilliant in places.

Research indicates they were produced by ancient people using pigment mixing red iron ore and ox blood. In most of the drawings, the color was possibly applied with fingers, while the larger ones were painted with feather brushes or other tools.
