The Mao Dun Literature Award is one of the highest literature awards in China. It was established in 1981 according to Mao Dun's last wish. Mao Dun, one of the biggest names in 20th century Chinese literature, contributed 250,000 yuan to help the award which aims at promoting Chinese literature. The candidate works must be full-length novels by Chinese writers, of at least 130,000 words, and published on the Chinese mainland within the appraised years.
