Jianzhen (Ganjin in Japanese) (Chinese: 鉴真) was a Chinese Buddhist monk of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) who introduced the Ritsu school of Buddhism to Japan.

Jianzhen was born to a Buddhist family in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. His original name was Chunyu. At the age of twenty he traveled to China’s capital Chang'an (modern-day Xi'an) to begin his studies. (More ...)
