Shanghai-Jiading Expressway

1986: China's first icegoing ship "Jidi" embarked on its voyage around the world from Qingdao Port.

1987: More than 700 people fell ill in a food poisoning case in Shanghai due to a restaurant's violation of health regulations.

1988: The Shanghai-Jiading Expressway, the first one in China, opened to traffic.

1989: The ship "Golden Hill" from Shanghai Port Barge Transport Co., with a loading capacity of 4,359.7 tons, encountered a sudden tornadic waterspout and sank deep into the Bohai Sea at latitude 38°28.5' north and longitude 120°17.5' east. Of all its crew members, only seven bodies were found.

1989: The Law of the People's Republic of China on Assemblies, Processions and Demonstrations was adopted at the 10th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Seventh National People's Congress.

1994: Xinhua News Agency reported that, after accurate field measurements, two professors from Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping indicated that the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet was exactly 115.703 m high.

1999: Four Chinese athletes, Yang Yang (A), Yang Yang (S), Wang Chunlu and Sun Dandan, won the women's 3,000 m relay, clocking in at five seconds faster than the world record of 4'16260, at the Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Utah, America.
