1970: China established diplomatic relations with Italy.

1972: China established diplomatic relations with Madagascar.

1986: To celebrate the 40th anniversary of UNICEF and to mark International Year of Peace, Beijing held the torch lighting ceremony at Tiananmen Square to launch the Beijing leg of the first global relay.

1988: Two earthquakes occurred in southwest Yunnan Province, killing 722 people and injuring 2,225. A total of 2.5 million people were affected.

1995: Wang Xuan, president of Peking University Founder Research Institute, was awarded the "UNESCO Science Prize."

1998: China's first online university, the School of Multimedia Information Education at Hunan University, opened. More than 1,000 students from 15 places across Hunan Province started their first lessons on the Internet.

2013: half a dozen homemade bombs explode in front of the office building of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China on Yingze Street in Taiyuan, killing one person and injuring another eight.
