Director Zhang Yimou accepts the Golden Bear Award for his film Red Sorghum at the 1988 Berlin International Film Festival.

1873: Liang Qichao, a Chinese scholar and one of the leaders of the Reform Movement of 1898, was born.

1988: Red Sorghum, a film directed by Zhang Yimou, won the Golden Bear prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. Jiang Wen and Gong Li starred in the film.

1992: The 16th Winter Olympics ended after 16 days of competition in Albertville, France, where China won its first medals in the Winter Olympic Games. Ye Qiaobo won two silver medals and Li Yan one silver medal.

2006: Chinese freestyle skier Han Xiaopeng won a gold medal in the Turin Winter Olympic Games. It was China's first Olympic gold medal in snow sports.
