The Boxer (Righteous Harmony Society) was the secret martial arts society active in northern China, which launched the Boxer Movement in 1898, sweeping across Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, and all across northeastern China. The movement upheld the slogan, “Support the Qing to annihilate the foreigners.” The movement was actually used as a tool against the foreigners by the Qing government, who in turn feared the power of the Boxers. Demands from Westerners were placed upon the Qing court to quash the movement, and the short-lived society was ended thereafter.
