On September 24, 2000, the opening ceremony of the 12th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) was held in Beijing International Convention Center.

One of five scientific Olympiads sponsored by UNESCO, the IOI is a contest in computer studies open to middle school students from around the world. Hosted by a different country annually, the IOI promotes computing skills among young people and offers participants an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the host country.

Only 13 teams participated in the first IOI in 1988, but the popularity of the contest spread rapidly. More than 200 contestants from 70 countries and regions participated in the 12th IOI in Beijing, which was also the first time the contest was held in the Asia-Pacific region.

Contestants have to perform computer programming tasks against the clock. Prizes are given to those who show creativity and a broad knowledge of information technology.

The IOI 2000 ended on September 29.

China had hosted International Olympiad on mathematics, physics and chemistry before 2000.
