108 Pagodas

The 108 Pagodas are situated under the cliffs on the western bank of the Qingtong Gorge Reservoir, 60 km south of Yinchuan. They are solid brick structures of Lamaism, with the highest standing at 3.5 m. They were arranged in 12 rows on a slope, each row in odd number. Their construction was said to have started during the Western Xia period (1038-1227), earthen adobes at first. When they were repaired in the Ming and Qing times, the original earthen abodes were turned into brick ones.
