The Qiantang River Tides (钱塘潮) refer to the rare natural phenomenon of periodic rise and fall of the ocean surface caused by tidal force from the sun and the moon on the Qiantang River in Xiaoshan City of Zhejiang Province.
The Qiangtang Rive Tides are an annual spectacle since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and is well known for its roaring tides. The tidal bore usually starts from the beginning of the eighth lunar month of Chinese calendar, with its peak on the 18th day.
On the 18th day of the eighth lunar month, tens of thousands of visitors will gather along the dam of the Qiantang River to watch the magnificent tidal bore. The natural spectacle has become a popular sight for tourists from home and abroad.
