As one of the Four Great Buddhist Mountains in China, Mount Wutai (五台山) is located in Wutai County, where people began to build temples in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), lasting for some 1900 years. Now in Mount Wutai, 76 temples remain, ranking first in China.
The landmark of Mount Wutai is the Nepalese-style Great White Pagoda. Its base has a circumference of 83.3 m. Inside the pagoda, there is small iron stupa from India, in which some remains of Sakyamuni are kept.
Mount Wutai also boasts one of China's four original Tang Dynasty structures a major hall of the Nanchan Temple, together with its Tang painted sculptures.
