Chinese Academy of Sciences

As an institution under the State Council, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in Beijing on November 1, 1949 on the basis of the former Academia Sinica (Central Academy of Sciences) and Beiping Academy of Sciences. Headquartered in Beijing, the CAS is a leading academic institution and comprehensive research center in natural sciences and high-tech innovation in China. Its six academic divisions are Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences and Medicine, Earth Sciences, Information Technical Sciences, and Technological Sciences. The CAS has more than 100 research institutes nationwide, including 30 internationally prestigious ones, over 200 science and technology enterprises, and more than 20 supporting units, including one university (the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui), one graduate school (the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), and five documentation and information centers. The CAS has branches in 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government.

The CAS is responsible for conducting research in basic and technological sciences, undertaking nationwide integrated surveys on natural resources and eco-environment, providing the country with scientific data and advice for government decision-making, implementing key state sci-tech projects to facilitate social and economic development, initiating personnel training, and promoting China's high-tech enterprises through its active involvement in these areas.
