Qinqiang (Shaanxi opera) appeared during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The singing is loud and clear, and the clapper accompaniment has strong rhythm. The acting is also plain and vigorous. Qinqiang was widely popular around the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, influencing to different degrees many other types of opera. Shaanxi opera now enjoys big audiences in Shaanxi, Gansu and Qinghai, and its traditional repertoire includes over two thousand items.
