On December 2, 1988, Chinese mountaineers of the joint Sino-US mountaineering team, Li Zhixin and Wang Yongfeng, climbed the Vinson Massif, highest peak of Antarctic.
Vinson Massif is the highest mountain of Antarctica with an altitude of 5,140m. Although it was the "warm season", the temperature was minus 40 degrees Celsius with a gale-force wind, making climbing as hard as ascending Mt. Qomolangma (Everest).
Vice captain of the climbing team Li Zhixin and member Wang Yongfeng started off from the No.3 camp and reached the peak respectively at Beijing time 3:30 o'clock and 6:08 o' clock on December 2. Li Zhixin only spent seven hours and two minutes getting from Camp 3 to the summit.
