1945: Chinese musician Xian Xinghai died.
1989: Project Hope was created to help deprived children.
1990: The National Bureau of Statistics published the data of the fourth national census: by the end of June 1990, the mainland population had reached 1,133,682,501. Including the population data of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao provided by Taiwan authorities, the British Hong Kong Government and Portugal Macao Government respectively, the final Chinese population count totaled 1,160,017,381.
1992: A joint Chinese-Japanese expedition became the first to reach the summit of Namjag Barwa Mountain, the highest eastern anchor of the Himalayan chain at 7,782 m above sea level.
