On October 4, 1995, China's first modern highway through a desert area – the Tarim Desert Highway – was officially opened. The 522 km highway, 466 km of which lies within the Taklimakan Desert, has greatly reduced traveling time between northern and southern parts of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
