A landside ravaged Panhe Village, Zhaotong City, at 6:00 pm, September 23, 1991. The affected area, blanketed in mud and rocks that piled 20 meters high, was four kilometers long and 300 meters wide. Most of the 106 cottages in the village were destroyed by the catastrophe, which claimed 216 lives and injured seven, according to figures released on September 26. The disaster had caused an economic loss totaling millions of yuan. The landslide had hit after days of continuous light rain.
