The Ninth China (Beijing) International Garden Exposition (第九届中国（北京）国际园林博览会) opened on May 18, 2013, marking the first nation-level garden expo ever to be held in Beijing.
Located in southwestern Beijing, opposite the Lugou Bridge, the expo takes up an area of 267 hectares. Standing on an old landfill site, the garden was one of the projects launched by the Beijing Municipality to speed up the development of its southern areas. The goal was to restore the polluted land and convert it into an eco-friendly garden around the Yongding River. After the garden expo ends, the area is supposed to become a park.
The future park consists of one major road, one museum, one major tower, a 1.15-million-square-meter lake and five gardens -- namely, the Traditional Garden, the Modern Garden, the Creative Garden, the Eco-Garden and the International Garden. It uses the latest technologies in gardening in an attempt to enhance visitor interaction.
The gardens, created from new materials, recycled water, solar and wind energy, are supposed to be an educational center, campaigning for various methods of environmental protection.
The expo features 154 ticket windows and provides wheelchairs as well as baby carriages. From July to September, the gardens will be open longer at night.
