Li Shimin (599-649), the second son of Li Yuan, took advantage of the peasant rebellions and convinced his father to rise against Sui rule in Taiyuan. In the ensuing battles, Li displayed his talent for political and military maneuvers, playing a vital role in the capture of the Sui capital Chang'an and the establishment of the Tang Dynasty.
